Wiring the lights in a Flever dollhouse miniature kit

The light is what turns a built box into a room at dusk — here is how the wire, the pack and the switch go into a Flever dollhouse miniature kit, and what to do when a strand dies.

The short answer on lighting a miniature house kit

  • Plan the wire route and the pack position before a wall is glued.
  • The copper wire is enamelled: only the stripped tips conduct.
  • Larger kits carry two or three strands — keep them separate.
  • Test every strand with the batteries in before you close the box.
  • Leave the switch reachable, or the house is dark forever.

What is actually in the bag

Each kit carries a length of fine copper wire with warm-white LEDs set into it at intervals, and a small plastic battery pack with a switch. Larger models carry two or three separate strands so that a shop sign, a stairwell and a table lamp can be lit independently. The wire is enamelled: it looks bare but it is insulated, and only the stripped tips conduct.

The strands are deliberately longer than you need. Resist the urge to trim them to length before the build is finished.

Plan the route first

Before any wall is glued, decide where the battery pack lives and draw the route in pencil on the underside of the floor. Wires want to run along the inside corners, under furniture and behind the back wall. Drill or punch the pass-through holes while the panel is still flat on the table.

Leave the pack reachable. A beautiful house with the switch sealed inside it is a house that is dark forever.

Hiding the strand

A visible wire ruins the illusion faster than a crooked wall. Tuck the strand into the join between floor and wall, then cover it with the skirting, the carpet edge or a row of books. Where a wire has to cross an open floor, run it under a rug or a piece of furniture that will not move again.

A dab of glue every few centimetres keeps the strand from creeping back out as the house settles.

When a light does not come on

Nine failures out of ten are the batteries or the switch, so check those before despairing. After that, look at the two stripped tips at the pack: they work loose. If a single LED in the middle of a strand is dark while the rest glow, that bead has failed and the strand should be replaced — they are cheap, and we sell them loose.

Never test a strand straight across a fresh battery without the pack in between. The pack contains the resistor that keeps the beads alive.

Light questions people send us

What batteries does a Flever dollhouse miniature kit light take?

Two or three AA cells in the small switched pack that comes in the box, depending on the model. Nothing is soldered and nothing plugs into the wall, so the pack can be swapped by hand once the house is finished — provided you left it somewhere you can reach.

One LED in the strand has gone dark. Can it be fixed?

A single dead LED on a lit strand is almost always a pinched or stretched wire rather than a dead diode. Check where the wire passes through a panel first. If the whole strand is out, it is the pack or the contacts; write to us and we will post a replacement strand.

Can I leave the lights on all evening?

Yes. The LEDs draw very little and run cool enough to sit against printed card. What they do is eat batteries — four or five hours a night will empty a set in a fortnight, so switch off at the pack rather than leaving it lit overnight.
